Chapter 13
Absolem sat in his throne room and puffed on his qalyan.
His throne room was actually nothing more than a dilapidated warehouse nearby the closed down Titan City starport. It really didnât matter to Absolem what the building once was. Now it was his abode and it suited his needs. The crime lord wasnât happy at this very moment. Someone had stolen his supply of his favorite spice and no one in his organization would own up to it or to their failures. It was the latter which made him the maddest. Everyone makes mistakes and no one is above being robbed, as a master criminal he knew this better than most. But to think that no one would admit their short comings was unacceptable.
Since he was out of spice, he was smoking the dredges of his waterpipe. Heâd had a slave drain the sacred water slowly through paper to catch the residue of the spice and then refilled. Once the paper was dried, it was ground up and placed in the fire bowl of the qalyan. It didnât nearly have the flavor or effect of the spice but it was better than nothing. And to top all of that, he was listening to a message from a Cartel brother with potentially bad news for the both of them. Evidently, the bounty hunter they had contracted for a job in Confederate space was an imposter. The real Red Falcon was on his way to meet him now.
All and all, it was not a good day to run out of spice.
Absolem finished reading the report and looked back at the monitor. âAre you sure the Red Falcon which is on his way to meet me is the real one and not the imposter?â
The hooded figure that was Cheshire nodded. âFor the third time, yes. My source is unimpeachable.â
âWhoâs your source?â
âSpartan.â
Absolem nearly dropped his pipe. âIf he knows, then perhaps the Godfather knows.â
Cheshire shook his head. âSpartan assured me that no one in the Cartel, other than you and I, are aware of the deception. He only alerted me since he considers the Red Falcon, which is on his way to meet you, a friend. He was hoping that youâd be considerate in your dealings with him. Call it a favor.â
Absolem perked up at that. âSpartan would owe me a favor?â
âNo, I would. Spartan called in my favor which means I now owe you.â
Absolem grumbled for a moment. It wouldâve been extremely lucky to have Spartan owe him a favor but then, it wouldnât be bad having another member of the Cartel owing him one either; especially since it wouldnât really cost him anything. âOkay Cheshire, you have a deal.â
âMany thanks Absolem. Let me know if you come up with a solution to our problem. I too will be looking for a remedy to the imposter.â
Even as the monitor went dead, one of his slaves ran up with more bad news. The skimmer of the upstart Barney was just outside his compound. Absolem pondered the situation.
